Seed Saving Initiative

Seed is the source of life and the first link in the food chain.  Control over seed means a control over our lives, our food and our freedom.

The Seed Saving Initiative: A Great Lakes Bioneers Project
Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago announces a new seed saving project!

This project is being started in response to the challenge made to attendees at the request of Vandana Shiva, who is internationally known as an advocate of seed saving and seed justice. During the 2012 Chicago Bioneers Conference, Dr. Shiva specifically requested that the Chicago Bioneers organization start a new seed saving project to help the local seed savers in their efforts.

Mission
The mission of this project is to honor and elevate the work of seed saving for the purposes of protecting and expanding the non-gmo native and edible seed saving projects as well as to protect the human right to save seeds and not be prohibited by law from saving seeds.

This goal will be met through the following efforts:

  • increasing the public awareness of seed saving initiatives already in existence,
  • organizing seed saving events, and
  • bringing together regional native and edible crop seed savers to work together on common areas of concern.

The project organizers invite all seed savers in the region to keep this project in mind in their future work and consider how this might be helpful.

If you know of seed saving efforts and projects where groups of people are saving seeds, we would like to know about it. Please contact us through our web form and put “seed saving” in the subject line.  Thank you.
