2012 Plenaries

Nina is co-founder of Bioneers. Hear her talk about how we need to unearth and heal a cultural legacy of violence that's insidiously embedded within us to bring about real change. Nina presents the recipe for chance: investing in the web of relatedness and re-imagining leadership as something every one of us is uniquely suited for. This emergent leadership is marked by humility and love.

Watch Nina's complete plenary at Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago's 2012 inaugural event. Nina is a social entrepreneur and Co-CEO and Co-founder of Bioneers. Nina’s life and work are informed by her passion for the natural world, women’s leadership, systems thinking, and the arts’ capacity to shape culture and consciousness.

Throughout her career, Nina has pioneered innovative social marketing strategies for successful ventures that have worked to advance social and environmental change. Previously, she served as president of Seeds of Change and as director of strategic marketing for Odwalla. In each case, she was instrumental in the companies achieving rapid national prominence.

Our times are governed by epic myths – that seed and food are industrial manufactures, not the source of life and nourishment; that industrial food systems are the only answer to hunger; that the future of humanity is in jungles of concrete, not in soil and gardens. Dr. Shiva dispels these myths and shows how the future of the city lies in gardens and organic connections to the countryside.

Watch Vandana Shiva's 2012 plenary at Great Lakes Chicago Bioneers inaugural event and then visit http://bioneerschicago.org for more about Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago.

Dr. Shiva is a philosopher, environmental activist, author and eco feminist. In 1982 she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, dedicated to high-quality, independent research to address the most significant ecological and social issues of our times. In 1991, she founded Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed.

Among her many awards are the Alternative Nobel Prize (Right Livelihood Award), Order of the Golden Ark, Global 500 Award of the UN, Earth Day International Award of the UN, Lennon ONO grant for peace award, Sydney Peace Prize, Doshi Bridgebuildep Award, Calgary Peace Prize and Thomas Merton Award.
