The ideas and strategies presented in this talk are real, field-tested city-scale examples that gather and attack dysfunctions in order to deal with them at once.

Mark is a co-founder of the City Repair Project in Portland, Oregon and served as the Co-Director of Creative Vision from 1995 to 2008. He also is the founder and principal of Communitecture, Inc., a cutting-edge design firm with sustainable building and planning projects.

After in the 1980′s as a lead designer of large scale corporate projects, Mark embarked on a series of cultural immersion projects with numerous indigenous societies in order to derive place-making patterns that could be applied to urban settings in the United States. These patterns include broad participation, local ownership and transference of authority to local populations, creative expression, and social capital as the primary economic engine of change.

Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago is a local, self-organized and self-funded National Bioneers affiliate partner. We are working within the Chicago region to promote sustainable community that fosters life-living relationship, nurtures connections and celebrates solutions for restoring and healing earth's communities.

Bioneers is a national movement that had its beginnings nearly 22 years ago. Bioneers are social and scientific innovators from all walks of life and disciplines who have peered deep into the heart of living systems to understand how nature operates, and to mimic “nature’s operating instructions” to serve human ends without harming the web of life.
